Demigod

Categorized Under: Review

Demigod is the new action/strategy/RPG game from Gas Powered Games.

Let me just start by saying this game is fun. The controls are simple and you can literally dive right into a game and figure it out as you go and enjoy yourself the entire time. The game has a story to justify the demigods fighting, basically trying to win favor with the gods to replace a dead god. The demigods fight against each other in beautifully detailed arenas with very cool designs with four different game types, conquest, dominate, slaughter, and fortress. Conquest mode has you trying to destroy the enemies citadel, which is their main base, before they destroy yours. Dominate is a game that awards points based on how many flags you hold as you gain points each second you hold them. Slaughter is a deathmatch game where points are awarded for killing enemy demigods. Fortress is similar to citadel but you must destroy many of these small fortresses.

Once you’ve picked a gametype its time to pick a demigod. There are two types, assassins and generals and 8 total to choose from in the game. Assassin demigods rely only on their own strengths and abilities to combat their foes and focus on upgrading their own health and armor whereas the general demigods can summon minions to fight for them and tend to have less of a direct damage focus and more minion enhancing abilities and support spells and attacks. As they kill opponents, take strategic points on the map such as flags, or destroy structures they gain experience. As demigods level up they gain more health and mana as well as a new ability to choose from on the skill tree. If a demigod needs to heal they can head back to the start point of the map which is usually by the citadel, item shop, and health crystal. The health crystal quickly refills health and mana, the drawback to using it is that you’re not on the frontlines any more so you always have to make a choice to determine if the fight you are going to enter is worth it. You can buy armor for your demigods at the item and artifact shop (the artifact shop is usually connected to a flag you must capture so getting the good items comes with having map control). Different items will allow you to have more health and/or mana, faster move or attack speeds, or useful abilities like faster cooldowns so special attacks can be used more often.

The battle system in this game is great. Starting by your citadel you march out to the front lines. Flags are scattered at various points on the map and holding these can grant you abilities like increased health or mana, faster cooldowns, or access to the artifact shop. As you approach the enemy side of the map you’ll notice towers and archer buildings. Getting too close to the towers at an early level can lead to a world of hurt. These towers will shoot any enemy that gets near them and serve as a great base defense so one of your objectives to help you beat your opponents is to start knocking these down as quickly as possible. On the side of your demigod are also allies who come through portals at regular short intervals. They cannot be controlled by the player. You can upgrade their armor and damage as well as add to the types of reinforcements that come out by purchasing upgrades at your citadel. These allies will march straight to the front lines, fight whatever threat is near and continue on. This is why taking out those towers is so necessary. They’re not the best at removing the towers but work great against the enemy reinforments and help to lay damage onto enemy demigods. The arenas you fight in are beautifully detailed and look amazing. The design of each one really does look epic and feel like an arena for demigods fighting for their place among the gods. Controlling the map, helping your allies push on further to enemy territory and using the proper armor and relics alongside your abilities all while making tactical desicisons about when and where to fight keeps this game fresh and makes sure that no two games are ever the same.

So far I’ve had a lot of fun playing this game. The graphics are amazing each map and demigod are extremely detailed. It has very simple controls, and nice learning curve, and the idea of rolling an RTS and RPG into one without the micromanagement really make this game a must have.
